TRAI and DoT have made a major decision for mobile users.

In a big step towards protecting mobile users from fraud and spam calls, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have jointly approved a new system that will soon show the caller’s name directly on your phone screen — just like Truecaller, but built right into your telecom network.

This means you will no longer need any third-party apps to identify unknown callers. Millions of mobile users across India are expected to benefit from this feature, which aims to enhance transparency and safety in digital communication.

Why This New System Was Needed

Over the past few years, telecom users have faced a growing problem of fraud calls, spam marketing, and prank calls from unknown numbers. The new feature will act as a strong shield against telecom fraud, helping people easily identify who is calling before answering.

Once implemented, the caller’s name will be displayed on your mobile screen whenever you receive a call. The name shown will be based on the KYC (Know Your Customer) information that was submitted when the SIM card was registered.

How the Feature Works

This system is part of TRAI’s new Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service. Here’s how it works:

  • When a call comes in, your phone will automatically display the caller’s registered name as per the telecom provider’s KYC records.
  • The feature will be enabled by default for all users.
  • However, if a user wishes, they can manually deactivate the service.

This built-in feature eliminates the need for apps like Truecaller or other call-identification services, ensuring better data privacy and accuracy.

Background: Proposed in 2024, Approved in 2025

In February 2024, TRAI first proposed the CNAP service, suggesting that it be activated only if customers opted in. Later, the DoT recommended that the feature should instead be enabled by default, with users having the choice to opt out.

After reviewing the proposal, TRAI agreed with DoT’s suggestion. Now, both departments have finalized the decision, paving the way for nationwide implementation.

The service has already undergone successful trials in Mumbai and Haryana, proving its effectiveness in reducing spam and fraudulent calls.

Who Will Be Exempted

Certain individuals and agencies will be exempted from this rule. According to reports, those who have subscribed to the Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR) feature will not have their names displayed.

This exemption applies mainly to:

  • Intelligence and security agencies
  • VIPs and government officials
  • Individuals with verified CLIR approval

The DoT has clarified that anyone requesting CLIR will go through a strict verification process to prevent misuse of the exemption.

With this update, Indian mobile users will soon enjoy greater safety, transparency, and control over their calls. Fraudsters and prank callers will find it much harder to hide their identity, while genuine users can communicate more confidently.
