New Delhi. Winter is arriving early this year, with a cold wave sweeping across several northern states. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a western disturbance over the Himalayan region and a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal are causing dramatic shifts in the weather across North and Central India.

The combined impact of these systems will bring snowfall to the mountains and light to moderate rain in the plains, leading to a noticeable drop in temperature over the next two to three days. Meteorologists say this marks the true onset of winter in North India.

Snowfall Returns to the Hills

Fresh snowfall is expected in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand between November 4 and 5, after a long dry spell. The upper reaches of these regions will likely receive moderate to heavy snow, while rainfall is predicted in the lower hills and adjoining plains.

This change will bring down day and night temperatures, sending cold winds sweeping into the northern plains. Experts believe that the chill will intensify by the second week of November, making it one of the coldest early starts to winter in recent years.

Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh Brace for Cold Winds

The Delhi-NCR region is already witnessing signs of the upcoming chill. Over the past few days, daytime temperatures have hovered around 30°C, while night temperatures have dipped below normal. The IMD forecasts drizzle, fog, and northwesterly winds through Sunday, which will make mornings and evenings considerably colder.

In western Uttar Pradesh, the mercury is expected to fall further, while eastern UP and Bihar will also begin to experience cold winds and misty mornings. In some regions, minimum temperatures may drop to around 4°C in the coming days.

However, pollution levels may rise temporarily due to changing wind patterns before improving later in the week.

Rain Predicted in Madhya Pradesh and Central India

The western and central parts of Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal, Indore, and Guna, are expected to receive scattered rainfall on November 4 and 5. Light rain is also possible in southwestern MP and northern Maharashtra, leading to cooler nights and increased winter-like conditions.

Meanwhile, the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is shifting toward Myanmar and Bangladesh, likely bringing heavy rainfall to the northeastern states — particularly Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland.

Another weakened low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea could bring mild showers to southern Rajasthan, eastern Gujarat, and Maharashtra, contributing to the overall cooling trend.

IMD’s Outlook: Winter Will Deepen Further

According to the IMD’s extended forecast, cold and foggy mornings will become more frequent in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh after November 5. The temperature gradient between the plains and the mountains will increase, allowing cold winds to dominate northern and central India.

Experts say this could be the strongest early cold wave in the past five years, with dense fog and low visibility expected in parts of North India as the month progresses.

What to Expect in the Coming Days

  • Snowfall: Upper Himalayan regions (Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand)
  • Rainfall: Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra
  • Fog and Chill: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Rajasthan
  • Heavy Rain: Northeastern states due to Bay of Bengal system

Residents are advised to prepare for colder mornings, keep warm clothing handy, and stay updated with IMD alerts as temperatures continue to drop.
